What does ICT4D mean?

Helvetas has the following definition: Information & Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) is the use of digital technology to increase the impact or scale of a development or humanitarian action that addresses a development or humanitarian challenge.

The ICT4D Tag indicates whether and how a project integrates ICT4D.

Disaggregation

  • NO: The project has no ICT4D component (i.e., the project does not use digital technology to increase its impact or scale).

  • YES – use of ICT4D tool(s): The project uses (an) ICT4D tool(s) to increase its impact or scale or supports a partner / system actor to use such (a) tool(s).

  • YES – support to digital eco-system: The project supports key stakeholders / system actors within the digital eco-system – government, private sector, or civil society – to foster inclusive digital development.

  • The use of e-learning courses (or a Learning Management System) in skills projects.

  • The use of an AI-powered chatbot to provide migrant services.

  • The use of big data (GIS, etc.) for monitoring, planning, or accountability in WFC projects.

Examples regarding the support to digital eco-system:

  • The support of key stakeholders to foster an inclusive digital economy in a country.

  • The support of civil society actors to counter online hate speech.
