Indicator Definition
| Indicator Name | WFC 1.4 Number of households (people) using hand-washing facility with soap and water |
|---|---|
| Indicator Definition | This indicator measures the proportion of individuals in households who have access to a hand-washing facility with soap and water within the projects’ target areas. A basic hand-washing facility refers to a device or container with water and soap that allows people to wash their hands. The facility must be in regular use and easily accessible to be considered functional. Handwashing facilities may be fixed or mobile and include a sink with tap water, buckets with taps, tippy-taps, and jugs or basins designated for handwashing. Soap includes bar soap, liquid soap, powder detergent, and soapy water (SDG 6.2.1). Note: In this indicator, the term "population" refers specifically to the people living within the target area of the project. |

| Measuring Unit | Households in the project area that have gained access to improved water and/or sanitation and hygiene services by HSI or HSI supported (implementing) partners (primary stakeholders) and people living in communities where HSI has supported public or private actors for improved water/sanitation management (secondary/indirect stakeholders). |
Kobo Questionnaires
If you use the SWC questionnaires you DON'T need to use this one. Please stick with the SWC one and report the numbers you got from there.
Examples of Actvities
Construction of hand-washing stations with soap and water.
Distribution of soap and hygiene kits.
Promotion of hand-washing practices through community awareness campaigns.
Development of community-led hand-washing programs.
Data Collection
| Data Source and Means of Verification | Household Survey: A representative sample of the target population is required. The provided household survey should be used for consistent global comparability. |
|---|---|
| Measuring Frecuency | At least baseline and endline |
| Data Collection Guidance | Conduct household surveys for a representative sample at baseline and endline. Ensure the survey captures whether the households have gained access/started using correct handwashing as a result of the project activities.

How to report
The proportion of the population using hand-washing facilities with soap and water is calculated by dividing the number of individuals living in households that report using such facilities by the total number of individuals living in the surveyed households.
These proportions then can be extrapolated to the full project population and reported together with the baseline distribution of age, gender, and “left-behind” groups. (This baseline profile requires capturing household composition in the baseline survey in any case.) When presenting results, always report absolute numbers of people. You may measure change as a percentage of households (e.g., “% of households who changed”), but you should report the findings as numbers of people, alongside the baseline demographic breakdown.
