WSG 1.1.3 Water supply systems constructed/rehabilitated

Indicator Definition

Indicator Name WSG 1.1.3 Number of improved water supply systems constructed/rehabilitated
Indicator Definition

This indicator counts the number of water points and water supply systems built or rehabilitated within the reporting period to provide safe and reliable drinking water. These systems are considered "improved sources" if they are designed and constructed to safely deliver water. Examples include piped water systems, boreholes, protected wells or springs, rainwater collection systems, and packaged or delivered water.

Both water points (e.g., wells or boreholes) and larger water supply systems (e.g., piped networks or community-based systems) are included under this indicator, allowing for flexibility in measuring access across different settings, such as communities, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Access type:

  • at community/at school/at health care facility

Water supply system

  • water point or water supply system

Measuring Unit

Water points or water supply systems located in communities, schools, or healthcare facilities.

Examples of Actvities

  • Construction of new water points (e.g., boreholes, protected springs).

  • Construction of new water supply systems, including piped water networks and rainwater harvesting systems.

  • Rehabilitation of existing water points or supply systems to restore functionality and ensure reliable water access.

  • Installation of solar-powered water systems to provide sustainable, off-grid water access.

  • Upgrading water points to ensure safe and reliable access to water, including improvements in water quality and resilience to climate variability.

  • Community training on the maintenance and management of water points and water supply systems.

Data Collection

Data Source and Means of Verification
  • Project data and construction records (BoQ) for water points and supply systems.

  • On-site verification to ensure that the water points or supply systems are fully functioning (per observation).

Measuring Frecuency

Data should be collected continuously throughout the project whenever construction or rehabilitation activities are completed.

Data Collection Guidance

Document the construction or rehabilitation process for each water point or water supply system.

Conduct on-site visits to verify that water points or supply systems are functioning and meet the criteria for improved water sources.

Ensure that data collection includes information on the number of people benefiting from the new or rehabilitated water supply systems.

How to report

Report the total number of completed and functioning water points or water supply systems that have been constructed or rehabilitated. Break down the data by location (community, school, healthcare facility). Exclude water points or systems that are still under construction or not yet functional.

Each water point/system is only counted once during a project lifetime.
